He went out into the big world of football as a 17-year-old and returned many years later, with, among other things, a Champions League title!
Loved locally and contested nationally
It's no secret that the vast majority of Norwegian supporters have an opinion about John Arne Riise. He is not quite typical Norwegian, and that can be a problem for many. What you can never get away from is that John Arne has bled for Liverpool and has a track record that few other Norwegian footballers can show.
He is loved by local Liverpool supporters and supporters in the rest of the world. It just had to be missing, the guy who traveled the world as a 17-year-old and returned home with lots of silverware in his football bag is nothing less than a Liverpool legend. We like the guy, we love everything he did for our beloved Liverpool and we can't wait to get to know him better during Liverpool Festival 2025!
Traveled out as a 17-year-old!
A, for the vast majority of people, rather unknown 17-year-old was bought to Monaco for £700,000 from Ålesund in the summer of 1998. After three years in Monaco, several Premier League clubs started to smell this hard-working, and not least hard-shooting Norwegian. Eventually it was between Fulham and Liverpool, and you know where he ended up!
He can be very proud of what he's achieved with Liverpool. He has played nearly 350 games and scored a lot of goals. He's played at a very high level for a long time now. He's never injured and he's a great professional who has always looked after himself. Jamie Carragher on John Arne Riise
He was an immediate success in his first season and made his mark on the scoresheet in his second game. Riise scored the last goal in the 3-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park. Two months later he did what is often enough to qualify as a legend, he scored at Old Trafford. A shot from around 20, which was measured at 112 km/h, found its way into the net. Check out the best goals from John Arne in the video below!
Lots of silverware
It was seven years for Riise in the red suit and on the way he got a lot of silverware. Charity Shield, FA Cup, League Cup, European Super Cup twice, and of course the Champions league title from 2005, known as the miracle in Istanbul.
He could also register for 348 games, 31 goals and 36 assists. That's more than acceptable in our book.
Career after Liverpool
In 2008 he went to Rome before in 2011 he was brought back to the Premier league and the club that failed to bring him earlier, Fulham. There he got to play with brother Bjørn Helge before he started the tapering off of a great career by taking a trip to Cypriot football, taking a league title from India with him and finally stopping by Ålesund before he shone over Rollon in the 4th division.
John Arne Riise has also recorded matches for the national team. He is the player with the most matches for Norway, a total of 110 matches. He can also score 16 goals and has worn the captain's armband in two games.
The supporter's dinner
Riise is one of our guests during the Liverpool Festival's Supporter Dinner on Thursday evening. Here, the other guests will get to know an open and honest John Arne who will talk about his career, about what it was like to travel abroad as a 17-year-old, and of course about what it is like to be John Arne Riise!
